FARS is based on the Furness peninsula in south Cumbria. Furness includes the shipbuilding town of Barrow-in-Furness, as well as surrounding towns and village such as Dalton, Newton, Askam, Kirkby and Lindal. Although not officially Furness, the market town of Ulverston is close by and is the birthplace of film icon Stan Laurel (who FARS recently commemorated 125 years since the birth of) and Sir John Barrow the famous explorer and founder of the Royal Geographical Society.
